Youth Services News: Summer Camp 2005 has ended and the
Enrichment Center program for 2005-2006 is well underway.
Highlights from the summer include trips to Jeepers!, a pool party
at Mr. Wilmore’s house, and the always popular trip to Six Flags.
Educational enrichment was provided through an interactive visit to
the Rolling Rainforest Exhibit
http://discoverycreek.org/activities/rolling_rainforest.php,
visits to the Washington Monument and the Smithsonian Museum of
American History, and several project based learning activities.

Our Summer Youth workers had a very productive
training week from August 15th -19th.
They received a lot of information on preparing for the job world,
including a Q&A session with non-profit executives Takeia Bradley
and Nekose Wills. They also visited American University where they
received an orientation from Ms. Vanessa Anthony, Admissions
Counselor at AU Law School. Several youth workers also accompanied
staff on a visit to the University of Maryland at College Park. Dr.
Keith Camper opened the doors of his dental practice to the workers
on Friday for a visit which was enjoyed by all in attendance.
Only a month into the Enrichment Center
program, and our new Physical Fitness Initiative is well underway.
Excitement over our Tae-Bo Kicks for Kids Class as well as our new
Hip Hop Dance Class continues to build week after week. Kids and
staff alike spend approximately 2 ½ hours per week sweating along
with Billy Blanks and his crew!! Ms. Stephanie is also busy
teaching the young ladies a dance routine to the techno hit “Music
Makes You Lose Control”. We got in the Halloween mood early as we
went on a field trip to see Tim Burton’s, The Corpse Bride at
Gallery Place Cinema and celebrated culture during a visit to the
Smithsonian Museum of the American Indian.
Upcoming events include a service project to
help local evacuees from Hurricane Katrina, a Halloween
Extravaganza, and a Thanksgiving potluck catered by the Enrichment
Center youth.
